The City of Lawndale has had recent coyote sightings. Please be aware of your surroundings and follow these tips to keep yourself and pets safe.
If a coyote or any wild animal is exhibiting aggressive behavior, you can contact the Lawndale Municipal Services Department at (310) 973-3220 or go online to www.laanimalservices.com/coyotes.
The City of Lawndale Animal Control Department would like to remind residents of tips that they can employ to discourage coyotes from roaming into residential neighborhoods.
Homeowners and business owners should secure trash cans and make sure that coyotes and wildlife cannot access discarded food left in trash cans.
Pet owners should remove uneaten pet food and be sure not to store pet foods outside where they can attract coyotes or other wildlife.
Property owners should be sure and clear excess brush and leaves from front and rear yards, as these can be appealing sites for coyotes.
Coyotes are omnivores so rotting fruit from fruit trees can be an attractive meal. Homeowners should remove fallen fruit and dispose of it in a secured trash receptacle.
Crawl spaces under porches, sheds, and decks should be closed off as they are attractive places for coyotes to rest and raise their young.
Dogs should be walked on a leash so that they do not chase or attempt to interact with coyotes.
Children and small pets should never be left outdoors unattended if there are coyotes in your area.
If you see a coyote, make loud noises and scare them away. Banging pots and pans or blowing a whistle can be effective ways to scare away coyotes.
Remove sources of water, especially in dry climates.
