What is YAC?

The Youth Advisory Committee is a group of young people who want to see change for Lawndale youth. YAC meets once a Month (5:30 p.m. on the second Tuesday) to discuss youth and teen programs and activities.

What kind of stuff does YAC do?

  • Assist with planning and organizing youth and teen events
  • Brainstorm
  • Discuss youth needs
  • Volunteer
  • Make changes in the community!

How do I become a YAC member?
To qualify, a young person must:

  • Be a resident of Lawndale
  • Be in school, grade 6 through 12
  • Be 18 years of age or less
  • Have the written consent of a parent or legal guardian

How do I apply?
Submit a Youth Advisory Committee Application form. The form must be signed by a parent or legal guardian if the applicant is a minor.

Then what?
Seven members will be appointed by the mayor with the City Council's approval. The members will serve a two-year term that begins on October 1 of even-numbered years and ends on September 30 the next even numbered year.

Member Stipends:
Each member is a volunteer appointed by the City Council. There is no compensation paid to members.

Dual Membership for Elected Officials:
Each Youth Advisory Committee member is appointed by the City Council. Per Lawndale Municipal Code, Section 2.04.070, members holding other City positions, "No person elected or appointed to membership on the council shall, subsequent to such election or appointment, be eligible for employment or for appointment to any position with the City for which compensation is paid, until one year has elapsed after such person has ceased to be a member of the council."

Dual Commission Memberships:
Commission members are only allowed to serve on one Commission at any one time for the City.
